Summary

Most Oracle PPM programmes lose weeks to data. Project structures, budgets, assignments and history have to move from spreadsheets, legacy tools and other Oracle modules into Oracle Project Portfolio Management Cloud, and delivery cannot stop while they do.

This paper sets out a migration method built from the migrations Projects Expert has run for clients: validate before you load, reconcile as you go, and cut over in slices rather than in one weekend.

A migration method that keeps delivery running

The method has three commitments. Every record is validated against Oracle rules before it is written. Every load produces a reconciliation report the PMO can sign. And the estate is moved in slices, programme by programme, so live delivery is never paused.

Slicing is the decision that matters most. It trades a longer overall window for a programme that never has to explain a stopped week to its sponsors.

Validation before load

Rules, lookups and referential checks run on the source data first. Exceptions go to a queue owned by the PMO data owner, not to the migration team, because the people who know the projects are the people who can fix the records.

Cutover and reconciliation

Each slice ends with a reconciliation pack: counts, totals and exceptions, signed by the data owner. Nothing moves to the next slice until the pack is signed.

Checklist

  • Name a data owner per programme before you map a single field.
  • Validate in the source, load into Oracle.
  • Reconcile after every load, not at the end.
  • Slice by programme; never by table.
